WHO´S IN YOUR FAMILY TREE?

Year of Publication: 2005
Format: Poster
Origin: Toronto, Canada
Language: English
Subjects:
Children of LGBTQ Parents, Parenting/family issues, Schools/Education
Description:

Family trees carry meaning in many cultures and often children complete family tree exercises in school. These exercises generally assume that children are part of traditional, nuclear families and therefore exclude children of LGBTQ-headed families. Using family tree imagery and symbols, this poster challenges the assumption that all children are part of traditional families. Further, tree imagery allows us to celebrate LGBTQ families by using positive, colourful visuals; by representing the diversity within LGBTQ, and other, families on different "branches" of the family tree; and by defining the "roots" of families — love, respect and diversity.

The poster celebrates not only queer families but also diversity in families of all backgrounds. The border of the poster includes the word "family" in more than 30 languages.

The poster is designed for display in schools, daycares, libraries, community centres, and other public spaces.
